How does acupuncture work?

There is a relation between our organs and our skin. An organ, not well functioning, will give signals via the nerve system to the bone marrow. A certain skin area will then be stimulated that belongs to that organ. A well known example is the pain radiating to the left arm of people with a heart disorder. Acupuncture is based on the philosophy that you can treat the sick organ by stimulating the nervous system under the corresponding skin area. This way, you stimulate the self healing mechanism of the body.

How do you formulate a diagnosis?

First of all by asking questions concerning the complaints, physical health, and emotional problems. In Chinese medicine emotional problems are considered an important cause for physical complaints. Empirically they have also determined which emotion belongs to which organ. Disorders to the liver and the gallbladder can coincide with anger and irritation. To disorders of the spleen/pancreas and overwhelming pressure belong to the emotion worry. To the kidneys and the bladder belongs the emotion fear. If I observe that a certain organ of the body is not functioning well, I then always ask for the experiences with the associated emotion. It is really not terrible if you are once frightened, angry or dejected, but if a certain emotion will predominate, it can give complaints physically. Moreover we look at the tongue in acupuncture – this technique gives us vital information about the patient’s condition and also we feel the pulse. These techniques reflect in fact all major organs in our body. According to the symptoms the patient mentions, we can already have an idea of what is going on. When this is supported by the testing of the pulse and the observation of the tongue, you can establish the treatment protocol.

Do the needles hurt?

The needles which we use are flexible and very thin. The needles are thinner than the ones e used for blood samples or injection. The little stings therefore you hardly feel. As needles sit in place, it is however, the intention that you feel something, because that is a sign that they are stimulating the meridian point. When you feel something it does not mean that you have pain. It can be a tingling or a warmth sensation. Someone feels nothing, then I move the needles a little back and forth to bring about the therapeutic effect.

When can acupuncture help?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends acupuncture or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for more than 50 physical as well mental problems. These include; all types of aches and pains, allergies, stomach and intestinal problems, and high blood pressure. But also gallstones, meno-pause and pre menstrual syndrome, migraines, back disorders and addictions. And also through TCM treats hyperventilation, nervousness, restlessness, fears, depressions, and even some forms of infertility can be helped. With acupuncture you can not heal cancer and also you cannot undo anatomical changes. But it can be used in conjunction with major surgeries an chemical therapies to alleviate some of the uncomfortable side-effects.In Europe, TCM has been mostly known due to the good results with pain suppression and stop smoking treatments. After having a few needles in your ear, will not make you suddenly stop smoking. But it can support your willpower.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

“It is much more important to know what sort of patient has a disease than what sort of disease a patient has.” (Albert Schweizer)

The application of Shiatsu massage, acupuncture, relaxing exercise such as Tai Chi Chuan, herbal formulas and diet recommendations form a combination of therapies, which I use for my treatments.

I believe the human body is a perfect system. My goal with treating illness patterns is to find where the blockage and/ or deficiency excess is. Whether the source is emotional, mental, or truly physical and by putting the pieces back into their original position, the perfect system will once again be in balance.

First treatment consists of intake of complaints, where upon I make an initial diagnosis.

Normal treatment time is one hour, during which I may prescribe Chinese herbal remedies and give diet and lifestyle suggestions. It can also include Oriental style massage, heat treatments with Chinese herbal Moxa, vacuum therapy with glass cups (‘cupping’), and acupuncture needling. 35-65% of my clientele is suffering from some form of stress related illness pattern such as burn out, sleep disorders, RSI, and fatigue. In the past few years, fertility treatments for women have increased as well.
